The team behind and in front of "Bad Education" truly seems to have worked perfectly like a clockwork, every gear is well oiled and devoted to its purpose. Director Cory Finley's ( Thoroughbreds" sophomore feature depicts a controversial scandal with wit, humanism and style, choosing the middle of the true story as a starting point and cleverly unraveling the rest of it. The main of the main attractions, however, are the nuanced, authentic and absolutely mesmerising performances by Hugh Jackman and Allison Janney, the kind that should be considered for career-highs and must-sees.
As for the real life shocking tale behind "Bad Education" I didn't really know a thing about it before, and perhaps because of that it went down so smooth. New York's Roslyn school district's superintendent Frank Tassone (Hugh Jackman) is a beloved and joyful man with a great reputation, but a legal and emotional maelstrom of huge proportions sets everything off-course, when he, his staff, friends and relatives become the prime suspects in the unfolding of the single largest public school embezzlement scandal in American history.
Movie picks up on the events shortly before things take turn for the worse & as the plot progresses, the pacing does tend to drag a little, mostly in film's middle portion, but the second half shifts gears continuously and ends on a real high note. For a story with such controversy, bad deeds and confusion, Cory Finley has found a scope of great humanism to look at it through, and has figured ways to tell it with dark humor. In its core, it's a depiction of always wanting more, being unable to see the sense, about the ever unappeasable and powerful want of human being.
You better believe all the praise you've heard is on point, because Hugh Jackman really gives a masterclass in acting, depicting the central character of everything the movie stands for. A complicated and hypnotising work, with a depth, which's bottom is of unknown distance. But "Bad Education" doesn't stop giving, and Allison Janney is another flagship on the well-rounded cast. As far as acting goes, this is a movie with an amazing display of it.
Then comes the visual side of the story, with no more faults than the rest. Cinematography's admirably composed, very much in sync, and many of the aesthetical/visual storytelling choices visibly add extra emotion. It also has a very good soundtrack with a couple songs I haven't heard for a time too long, including Moby and Dido. There was this dance scene near the end, orchestrated by Moby's "In This World" that really got to me & from there on out everything was pure cinematic joy.
"Bad Education" poses many good reasons to watch it, for the awesome acting, the wicked wit and a rising director's talent, the scandalous true story, or perhaps because of the thoughts it could provoke within You. My rating: 9/10.
